Interlinked production systems are widely used in industry. With material flow systems that provide a permanent supply of needed parts at the right place and at the right time, these systems promise high levels of efficiency and productivity. However, if a component of the interlinked system fails, the production system stops completely. This can quickly cause very high costs. In addition, extensions and changes of the material flow layout are only possible with much effort.
In order to produce competitively in the future, the material flow systems of tomorrow must be flexible, adaptable and fully networked. In the project netkoPs a new, decentrally-controlled material flow system is being developed for production. This will make it possible in future for machines, handling and transport systems to act smart and operate along the lines of the cognitive abilities of humans.
